The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4:00 PM EST and unlike most other years; several big names could be on the move. The names of Lion’s WR Roy Williams, Larry Johnson, Ocho Cinco, and TJ Houshmandzadeh have all been bandied about but far and away the Crown Jewel of this year’s trade deadline class is Chief TE Tony Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, a future Hall of Famer and nine time Pro Bowler in his 12th year in Kansas City, has asked GM Carl Peterson for a trade to a contender. Gonzalez wasn’t that anxious to go but the continuous losing and with the Chief’s in three-to-five year rebuilding mode, Gonzalez would need to go elsewhere to even get a sniff of the playoffs never mind a ring.
Buffalo, Philly and the Giants and have shown interest but ….. For some reason the World Champions seem reluctant to pay the Chief asking price of two draft picks, a second and an additional pick. The Giants got a second and a fifth from the Saints for Jeremy Shockey. If the deal had presented itself in August, would the Giants have traded Shockey of Gonzalez straight up ???
Gonzalez is just 32 and injury free his entire career missing just one of his possible 180 career games. In his last start, he passed 10,000 career receiving yards and surpassed Shannon Sharpe for most receiving yardage ever by a Tight End. Gonzalez is an excellent blocker and can you imagine a Giants red-zone offense of Jacobs, Plax, and Tony G ???
Most importantly, Gonzal ez is a veteran and a quality guy that would fit right into the Coughlin scheme and locker room. He’d also be the perfect mentor for the very talented Kevin Boss and probably has 2-3 quality years left in the tank.
IMO, Gonzalez to the Giants in a no brainer and considering the developments of this week, a chance for the G-Men to separate themselves form the rest of the ultra-tough NFC East and an overall NFC that has seen the balance of league power start to shift their way. Lets see if they pull the trigger.
