The Pro Bowl selections were announced this week. IMO, the fans, players, and league pretty much got it right. While there is always room for debate and several “minor” snubs, the most glaring omission comes in the AFC where Brett Favre was taken ahead of Phillip Rivers and even Chad Pennington.
Rivers could be a victim of his own personality as he is generally not well liked around the league. He leads the league in QBR for starters at 101.4 and is tied for the NFL lead in touchdown passes with 28 against just 11 picks. Rivers is fifth in passing yardage with 3515 yards.
Peyton Manning and Jay Cut ler are both having excellent years and are without question the lynchpins of their respective offenses. Favre was chosen to his 10th Pro Bowl based on name recognition. Favre leads the lead in interceptions with 17 (21 TDs) and his QBR of 86.5 leaves him between Donovan McNabb and Eli Manning among starters.
An argument could also be made for Chad Pennington who has completed 66.3% of his passes for 3214 yards and a 14/6 TD/Int ratio. His QBR of 95.1 is fourth in the league and a full seven spots better than Cutler. Pennington has little to work with and his value to the Dolphins beyond question.
Rivers or Pennington or both will likely make it to Hawaii as Favre has not played in the games since 2001, preferring the time off. Over the years, the Pro Bowl has become less of an honor and more of way to pick up some extra jack as a relatively easy attainable contract incentive.
Next time, my under-the-radar Pro Bowl picks.
