The Green Bay Packers head into the 2008 NFL season without future Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still gunning for a Super Bowl victory.
The Packers will go with the untested Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, and have no plans to bring in a veteran to either back-up Rodgers or fill in if things get rocky. Green Bay will go with rookie Brian Brohm as Rodgers back-up.
Green Bay is +1800 to win the 2009 Super Bowl in NFL Futures Betting at BetUS.com. The Packers are +1000 to win the NFC Championship, and +190 to win the NFC North division. The Minnesota Vikings are favored to win the NFC North at +140.
Rodgers hasn’t started a game since his last season with the California Golden Bears in 2004.
But the Packers have other concerns that need resolving, like the contract dispute with left tailback Ryan Grant that kept him out of spring practice. The Packers say they plan on having Grant signed before training camp opens July 27. Grant rushed for 956 yards in his first full NFL season and is expected to be an important part of Green Bay’s offense this season.
There’s also some concern with the defensive line, as Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Justin Harrell, Colin Cole and Johnny Jolly were all nursing injuries in mini-camp.
Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Harrell, Cole and Jolly should be ready for training camp, but Gbaja-Biamila will be limited as he recovers from knee surgery.
The Packers lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game in January.
